THE FREQUENCY OF THIS CHANGE

The frequency and intensity of climate change coupled with its effects cannot be ignored, while growing up the weather pattern could be predicted, you could decide to get married in November or December and you can be sure it is not going to rain but over time this has not been the case, the changes in the weather pattern have been drastic and definitely unpredictable.

According to President Barack Obama “Today we are seeing that climate change is about more than a few unseasonable mild winter or hot summer. Its about the chain of natural catastrophes and devastating weather patterns that global warming is beginning to set off around the world……the frequency and intensity of which breaking records thousands of years old”.

From New York United State to Lagos Nigeria the story remains the same, for instance the recent Hurricane Katherine was the sixth strongest hurricane ever recorded and the third strongest to make landfall on the United States, In Lagos Nigeria the recent flooding was the worst hit in recent time, the rain that fell in a single day measures up to the amount of rain expected to fall in a month. These harsh realities of climate change did not come without destroying lives and properties.

QUOTES ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE:

All across the world, in every environment and region known to man increasingly dangerous weather pattern and devastating storms are abruptly putting an end to the long running debate over whether or not climate change is real. Not only is it real, it is here, and its effect are giving rise to the frightening new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster……………… President Barack Obama

THE ROAD TO DURBAN

The change is huge and it is happening so fast that it is almost difficult for us to keep up with all of them, and the effects of these changes are even huger and the frequency is so high we find it difficult to keep up. It is true the world is changing, and there are so many issues coming up daily demanding our attention, such issues such poverty, development ,gender, population growth, war etc these issue have been on the fore front of global debate ,but where does climate change stand?

We have had Kyoto protocol, yet there are still country that are yet to abide by what Kyoto protocol stand for ,Well here we are again we are heading to DURBAN for the climate summit. This time all road leads to Durban so we can help create a sustainable environment for the future generation.

Will these bring the desired change? Can Durban bring about the desired result Kyoto could not achieve? Let make the change happen and support alternative energy sources.

Quotes on Climate change: The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. There may still be disputes about how much we are contributing to the warming of the atmosphere and how much is naturally occurring, but what we can be scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to the point of no return. And unless we free ourselves from a dependence of these fossil fuel and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generation to global catastrophe…………..Barack Obama.

Let Durban count !!!#COP17 (follow on twitter @greenernaija)

WOMEN CAN FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

WOMEN CAN FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

A woman’s place in the society from history has always been controversial, why some believe the woman’s place should always be behind the scene, some believe they deserve to be at the fore front and be part of a process that will shape their lives, in the past women couldn’t vote or speak it was forbidden, some part of the world till date do not allow women to drive, and in other places a woman is considered delicate and should be treated with care and respect.

No matter where the place of a woman is in the society, a woman remains a great asset to the society and should be given the opportunity to thrive, in a male dominated world a woman should be brave and unstoppable, setting goals and achieving them, but there is a menace setting the woman back and slowing down her pace, this menace is climate change, the 21st century woman in both developed and developing country is faced with a challenge that aims to take her back to the place of and vulnerability and uncertainty ,a place where the future seems uncertain and bleak, making survival almost impossible.

Climate change is harder on women especially women in developing nations, when they are faced with desertification or deforestation the men migrate to greener areas leaving the women behind to take care of the children and find a way to survive, women have to deal with scarcity of water and resources.

If women would fight for their right and today women can vote and be voted for, with the efforts of women like of Susan B. Anthony, these were the women paved the way for the likes of Charles Gyude Bryant of Liberia. If these can be done then we can fight climate change and win, we can join our voices together and help save the future generation.

QUOTES: So long as society says a woman is incompetent to be a lawyer, minister or doctor, but has ample ability to be a teacher...every man of you who chooses this profession tacitly acknowledges that he has no more brains than a woman?

POPULATION GROWTH AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change has been an issue that remains on the lips of stakeholders, activist, environmentalist etc. The notion is that population growth affects the climate, but how true is this?
According to the United Nation in 1998,world population will be between 2 and 4 billion more people by 2040.overpopulation is known to be a major cause of increase in global gas emission, efforts towards green energy sources ,reduction in global emission of carbon dioxide will only yield maximum result if population grows steadily and stabilizes.
There is a huge difference in the population growth of developed nations and developing Nations, Developed nations contribute a higher percentage to global emission of green house gases and at the same time their population growth is not as high as the developing nations that contribute a smaller percentage to the emission of these harmful gases. This puts a question mark on premise that population growth affects the climate, but the truth remains that the continued increase in population increases the demand for these sources of energy, increases deforestation and other human activities that affects the environment.
It is true that the poorest countries that would be most affected by the effects of climate change, making children and women most vulnerable, and if there is a possible link between population growth and climate change, how do you educate an uneducated African man that believes he needs to have more children because his wife is yet to give him a male child? How do you discourage child marriage and empower the women to make the right choice about their reproductive health?
All these question begs for answers and shows the challenge climate change poses has so many faces to it and requires an all round solution, it shows that the solution lies in the hand of stakeholders and individuals, to the stake holders we need good education, proper health care, infrastructures and to individuals we need to make more informed choices and realize that our choices affects not only our environment but the future generation.

NIGERIA'S CHANGING CLIMATE

In recent times Nigeria has experienced a dramatic change in its weather pattern, while growing up we could predict the dry season and the wet season, but times have changed and the issue of climate change is no longer alien to us.
Nigeria is known to be one of the few countries in the world with little or no natural disaster ,we do not have earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunami or tornadoes, we have in the past considered ourselves lucky to be blessed but the world has become a global village, not only has Nigeria witnessed shrinking of its borders, thanks to information and technology, we are now in the age of twitter and face book where nothing is considered sacred, in the same vein we can no longer separate ourselves from the rest of the world, climate issues are no longer sacred to the island of Kiribati, Pakistan or Somalia, it has come knocking on our doors and we have to respond to its call.

Climate change is undeniably here with us in Nigeria, we have the recent flooding in Lagos and Ibadan, the absence of rain in the North, leading to droughts and crop failure, it is estimated that Nigeria is currently losing about 351,000 hectares of land mass to desert encroachment annually, impacting negatively on food supply. There is the ocean surge in our beaches caused by the rising sea level which is one of the impacts of climate change. Alpha Beach and Bar Beach have both witnessed ocean surges this year, leading the residents seek for help from the Lagos state government.

Lagos our commercial nerve center is only three meters above sea level, and the recent flooding had a huge effect on both lives and properties, with the trend of things, climate change is not a distance phenomenon, it affects us every day. It is no longer news that climate change will have a bigger impact on developing Nation, which Nigeria is part of, it is time for Nigerians and its leaders to realize that the future generation deserves a sustainable environment, an environment they can thrive in, without an outa of doubt ,there is a lot of work to be done.

The poverty level in Nigeria is very high, an average Nigerian cannot afford to spend a dollar a day, imagine the impact of climate change on food supply, the drought in Somalia is a testimony to this fact, the drought has claimed so many live ,many of whom are children. The provision of Infrastructure such as good road network, proper drainages, constant power supply, and affordable health care etc. will perhaps equip Nigerians to deal more effectively with the changing climate conditions.
The work to be done is not limited to our leaders alone, it involved Nigerians as responsible citizen, we have certain choices to make and these choices could either make or mar the future of Nigeria as a country, we need to know that the forest nature has bestowed upon us is for a purpose, tree felling is one of the major causes of global warming and Nigerians must realize that these trees have a part to play in sustaining our environment, we can be responsible enough to clear our drainages, desist from throwing dirt in the drainages so that water can flow freely when rain falls. We must be responsible enough to stop building on canal paths.

We can be responsible enough to tell others about climate change, and its effects on our lives because I believe one can reach a thousand and two can reach ten thousand. Nigeria! Let us rise like the giants we are and create a sustainable environment for the future generation.

BAN KI-MOON ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The United Nation Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon recently addressed the issue of climate change at a conference in Australia ,Ban ki-Moon expressed great concern about the climate change issue and its effects on lives he stated: “but the facts are clear: global green house gas emissions continue to rise, millions of people are suffering from climate impact. Climate change is very real”
Ban Ki-Moon spoke about the pacific nation of Kiribati and expressed the fears of parents and children who dread they might wake up one day and everything would have been swept away by the rising sea. The Island of Kiribati is just four meters (13feet) above sea level.
The time for the renewal of the Kyoto protocol which expires 2012 is now. Kyoto protocol remains the only global deal aimed at reducing the emission of green house gases.
The current trend of climate disasters in recent times shows the time for change has come; there is a need for countries to renew their commitments to the Kyoto protocol in order to protect the future generation. Countries like China and United States should please commit to the protocol and help preserve the environment.

Quotes: ‘Climate change is not about tomorrow. It is lapping at our feet-quite literally in Kiribati and elsewhere.’ Ban ki-moon

THE FIGHT AGAINST MALARIA AND GLOBAL WARMING

Malaria is a common phenomenon in Africa, that has claimed millions of lives, According to World Health Organization (WHO), “every 45 seconds a child dies of Malaria in Africa”, in pregnancy both mother and child are at the risk of malaria, this poses a challenge to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals of reduction child of mortality rate and improved maternal health by 2015.

The transmission of malaria is greatly influenced by climate conditions favorable to mosquitoes because warmer climate condition creates an avenue for mosquitoes to thrive and multiply. In the past wealthy aristocrats would go on the hill side during summer to stay away from diseases caused by warmer climate conditions.

A very good drainage system (which most developing countries lack) will serve as a means of reducing the proliferation of mosquitoes as the climate gets warmer. A good drainage system will also enhance free flow of water during heavy rain fall and prevent mosquitoes from breeding in stagnant water. Public health intervention and good economy can help deter these effects.

This shows that the least developed countries of the world will be worst hit by the effects of climate change. African leaders must realize that there is a lot of work to do in order to fight both malaria and global warming. We must join hands to a create sustainable environment for the future generation.

IBADAN FLOODING AND CLIMATE CHANGE

IBADAN FLOODING AND CLIMATE CHANGE

The recent flooding the south western part of Nigeria has claimed lives ,most of whom are children who drowned in the flood, the torrential rain led to the collapse of bridges and the loss of lives and properties. The residence of the largest city in the sub Saharan Africa have had to deal with bad leadership over the years with nothing to show as the dividend of democracy.

The city’s lack of infrastructure and good drainage system is to be blame for the huge impact the flood had on the residents, the question on the lips of Nigerians is that ,is it possible to have lessened the impact of this flood on lives and properties? My answer is yes! If our leaders take their jobs seriously and take a cue from the Lagos flooding In July, maybe the effects of the flooding would have been reduced.

When the Lagos flooding took place in July, it was apparent that the blocked drainages contributed immensely to the flood, one would have expected that stakeholders in other states would have taken steps to prepare for such occurrence.

The truth is that we cannot ignore climate change, it is here with us and we have to deal with it, our leaders have to realize that the climate we had ten years ago is no longer what we have now, some changes have taken place and we have to take cognizance of that.

It is better to take precautions before disasters occur, it is easier that way, if our laws were working building on canal path would not be possible, it is after disasters occur that we start the demolition of buildings on canal paths. Let’s take precautions before disasters occur, let us fight climate change.

DROUGHTS IN SOMALIA AND CLIMATE CHANGE

DROUGHTS IN SOMALIA AND CLIMATE CHANGE

The image of their faces linger as they slip away one after the other they were never given a chance to be who they should be, never knowing how life is suppose to be if hunger and famine hadn’t come knocking on their doors, snatching them away without respite taking away precious lives-this is the story of the Somali child ,some will never be told, some cut short even before they had a chance to begin, children that will never play in the rain or know the worries of adulthood just because our climate says otherwise.

How many more stories are we cutting short? How many more live do we have to part with? How many more live have to pay the price for the effect of climate change, how many lives are we cutting short by every tree we cut down? These are the questions that remains, these questions beg for answers each day, hoping that someday answers will come before we blow out the fire in the future generation before they have the chance to be kindled…..

HIKE IN THE COST OF KEROSENE AND GLOBAL WARMING

HIKE IN THE COST OF KEROSENE AND GLOBAL WARMING

The recent hike in the cost of kerosene has resulted in the use of firewood for cooking by Nigerians, therefore increasing the level of carbon in the atmosphere and at the same time reducing the number of trees, this trend has been on-going for a while now, without the government showing any serious concern on how this affects the populace in general.

The Lagos state government’s tree planting campaign and efforts towards reforestation is an initiative that should be emulated by other state governments, stakeholders should make it a priority to empower the populace, tackle poverty and remain sensitive to the plight of Nigerians, when it is impossible for an average Nigerian to afford kerosene, he/she look for an alternative, leading to the use of fire wood.

Trees are known to shrink carbon dioxide a major greenhouse gas, causing global warming, trees help to absorb excess carbon in the environment ,as a result the usefulness of trees cannot be overemphasized In our environment, especially with the recent flooding in Lagos, tree felling for domestic and commercial purposes should be discouraged in order to sustain our environment, statistics shows that between 1990 and 2005 Nigeria has lost over 79% of its forest, giving Nigeria the highest level of deforestation in the world.

The recent flooding is Lagos should serve has a warning for all stakeholder in Nigeria that the cumulative effect of their policies might not be immediate but in the long run it might be destructive, they might not consider that the hike in price of Kerosene might trigger more demand for firewood and thereby increase global warming.

The environment is already endangered as it is, let not make it worse, let’s protect our environment. Follow us on:@greenernaija

LAGOS FLOODING

LAGOS FLOODING! IS NATURE FIGHTING BACK?

Sunday the 10th of July 2011 started with light rain showers, with nothing to be worried or concerned about, unknowingly Lagosians will have a lot to deal with, the rains came down heavily and the impact on lives and properties of Nigerians is still yet to be ascertain, for those that have lost their loved ones, life might not be the same again, then I ask myself what if the rain on Sunday had fallen on a week day, how many lives would have been lost?

We should not endanger our lives and the lives of those coming after us all in the name of urbanization, houses have been built on the canals, making it impossible for the water to flow when it rains, even the so called developed areas in Lagos like victoria Island and Ikoyi often referred to “as the most expensive slum in the world”, these places were completely overtaken by the flood overflowing from the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoon. Most of the residents don’t care about the state of their drainages when it rains they bring out their expensive jeeps, lets pray the flood doesn’t get to a stage where even a jeep can’t withstand.

This brings us once again to that issue of climate change, the sea level has risen and more rain is being predicted, we need to start fighting climate change before it is too late, Its time to take action, its time to face the problem heads-on, its time to limit our activities to those that will sustain our environment, we have to bear in mind that the future of the future generation lies in the hands of the present generation.

I see Lagos as a city with a sustainable environment, free from the effect of climate change, with citizens sensitive enough to protect their environment from harm. Spread the word; follow us on twitter @greenernaija

CHOICE WE HAVE TO MAKE TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING

PLANT A TREE
DON'T WASTE WATER
RECYCLE
LIVE CLOSER TO WORK

TAKE A BICYCLE OR TAKE A WALK TO SHORTER DISTANCES

As individuals what choice do we have to make to fight global warming?

It is no longer news that we have been experiencing more rains and the weather gets drier and unpredictable, more rainfall, storms, flooding is predicted, violent storms that draw their force from warm ocean water, are likely to become more serious, some African countries (Nigeria included)are faced with droughts making it impossible for plants to grow in such areas.

The wealthier countries can afford to move their population to higher grounds;while poor nations might be faced with simply have to abandon their habitation especially if it is a low lying coastal area,as ice sheets is melting someanimals in the artic like the polar bear are forced into extinction, for instance the highest mountain in Africa, have lost 82 percent of their ice since 1912 and are estimated to be gone completely by 2020 (Microsoft Encarta).

Nigeria’s electricity problem and global warming

Nigeria’s electricity problem and global warming

As the world gets warmer and scientists predicts warmers days and nights, Nigerians get even less relief because of electricity problems, it is common knowledge that mosquitoes thrive in warmer conditions, thereby increasing malaria, scientists also predicts the increase of health issues such as respiratory diseases as warmer air inhaled is charged with pollutants, this I tell you does not spell relief for Nigerians because not everybody can afford to run their generators non-stop, running the generator to generate electricity also constitutes great health hazards for Nigerians, fumes from the generator(carbon monoxide) pollutes the environment and it is poisonous to human beings, we can only wonder how many Nigerians have lost their lives due to lack of electricity, no wonder the life-span of a Nigerian is less than 50 years.

Does constant power supply in Nigeria help to reduce the effect of global warming on Nigerians? The answer is yes! It is obvious that Nigeria is a developing Nation, and its population is more vulnerable to the effect of global warming. These are the reasons

1. We use more fuel to power generating plants.

2. Poisonous effects of Carbon monoxide on humans and the environment.

3. The atmosphere is warmer as a result of constant power failure

4. Lack of sleep as the night gets warmer leading to stress and reducing the productivity of Nigerians

5. Reduced life-span of the vulnerable populace

6. Increase in malaria as mosquitoes thrive in warmer climate conditions.

Let’s join hands to make Nigeria more habitable, let us not only make it greener, let us light it up, we must demand for what truly belongs to us.

TALK ABOUT LAGOS- "EKO ONI BAJE O"

Being an advocate for enviomental protection will open your eyes to current issues that affects our enviroments,we have to take decisive actions that will make
our environment sustainable(making it safer for the future generation)

Lagos as we know it is surrounded by water, making it unique and the pride of the nation,
Lagos serves as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria accounting for over 60 percent
Of Nigeria's income,Lagos is precious and we love it,it is a land of opportunity where graduates troops to in order to make a living, but imagine if we wake up one day and there is no Lagos anymore,it is not surprising to note that Lagos is just three meters above sea level,we know that lagos is not an alien to flooding and rising sea level.

Global warming caused by emission og green house gases specifically Carbon dioxide causes (ice melting, expands the sea, erodes the beaches, coastal area sinking, flooding, and erosion, affecting
human settlements,increased storm).

According to an article in WWW.ciesin.columbia.edu"although the level of sea level amount to only a few milimeter per year and may be small, this phenomenon plays a big role in expanding erosion processes affecting most of the low-lying coastline in the world"(Lagos included)

Our human activities in a lot of ways contribute to the rise in seal level, these activities include:bush burning, cutting down trees,in the name of urban development.Buildings have taken over where we are suppose to have trees that will protect us,we cut down trees without planting another. Please spread the word it is important we protect our enviroment.

I see lagos with a sustainable enviroment, free from the effects of climate change, with citizens sensitive enough to protect their enviroment from harm.

Thank you

Climate Change,Food Crises and the Nigerian Economy

Some say there is no food on my table and you ask me to pay attention to my enviroment, well the answer to such people is that if they don't pay attention, they will have less food on their table because enviromental issues contribute largely to global food crises.

We have to pay attention to the fact that as the climate gets warmer the incidence of flooding, ice melting increases thereby making it impossible for agricultural produce to thrive.According to the New York Times(the opinion pages)-rain-fed agriculture in some African countries may decrease by 50 Percent by 2020 because of climate change.

It is certain that the worst hit by climate change are the less priviledge, women and children these are set of people that are less able to take care of themselves in challenging situations,Climate change is like a war that needs to be fought and won,in order to protect the vulnerable populace.

The average Nigerian lives on less than a dollar a day,now tell me when the incidence of food crises thrives in our nation ,how will the common man survrive?won't this lead to more crimes in our cities? won't we spend more to protect our lives and properties?

Its a vicious cycle that needs to be stopped,we have to join hands together and live responsibly in order to protect our enviroment.

where are the trees?

As a young child I used to love travelling!anyway I still do....Sitting on the back seat of my dad's old Mazda 626,I would stare at the trees and all the beautiful creatures,I would marvel at how these tress stretch on forever and stand together just like a family,as if their peace would never be disturbed,so content...so secure in their owm world, acting as a protective sheild from the 'hot' 'hot' sun as we travel the long distance,I loved the gentle breeze, blowing on my sweet, innocent face, back then it felt Like heaven.

As I grew older,I noticed the tress disappear one by one,no more protective shield, all I have left were empty spaces ,and the sun shinning dowm ,burning my skin and making the journey I used to enjoy unbearable, then I learnt about how useful these tress were, how the ozone layer was depleting and how human activities are causing more harm than good, then my mind goes back to the good old days when we could rely on those tress as a sheild from the harsh rays of the sun.

Let's imagine those trees as a family, being displaced, the entire living creature in our forest,
Having no choice but to leave their habitat, how would I feel if I wake up one day and my home is gone? These are not just trees,God created them for the benefit of man as a shield.

This brings me to the movie"AVARTAR",where human beings bring their "bullbozer "and destroy the home of other living beings and leaving them with no choice but to fight back, when nature fights back ,can we measure up?

Nigeria, can we bring our trees back?can we join hands and stop cutting down our trees all in the name of urbanisation, when we cut down one tree, can we be responsible enough to plant at least two or more.

Please spread the word! Let's make the world greener

Greenernaija

25th,May 2011

Dear readers,

This is my first entry for this blog, and I can already anticipate that there is going to be a lot to learn from this moment ,not only about the effect of climate change on Nigeria and the rest of the world but how we can all come together and make sure our nation is safer and more secure for the future generation.

I strongly believe Nigeria is a great nation and its citizens are sensitive to changes in
our environment we can heed the call and make Nigeria greener than it is already,I am not saying it is easy but we have to put more effort and contribute to sustainable development of our great nation.

Let's be an advocate of greenernaija, tell a friend,a neighbour, family memebers about the importance of protecting our enviroment,we all know what happened in Japan and our hearts goes out to them but let us imagine if such happens in Nigeria, what will be our plight, won't our world be over by now?

Let's not fold our hand till disaster comes ,let us prevent disaster by being an advocate of
greenernaija...........

"I am doing mine this way"

Thank you
